The Carnival is great entertainment - it is even more fun if you are able to take part! The success of the carnival depends on businesses, residents and visitors taking part in the spirit of the carnival. We hope that everyone decorating premises and entering the carnival procession will join in the fun by thinking of a ‘Music, Music, Music’ theme to help make this a tuneful carnival. Think about – musical instruments, composers, dance, opera, ballet, West End productions and last but not least, the cinema. The theme is not compulsory but Music, Music, Music entries are more likely to catch the judges’ eye! We're hoping to see a record number of decorated houses and shops.

Conditions of Entry in the Carnival Procession
Entrants must be ready for judging at 2.30pm and remain with their class at all times. No drop off/back up vehicles for any entries will be allowed within the area after 2pm – pedestrian entries can be dropped off in Wentworth Road.
Marshals wear yellow safety vests and bright green caps. They will assist those who are not sure where to go. Horse drawn vehicles, motorcycles etc will be placed in the class most appropriate to the size of the entry.
Judges wear red sashes and are escorted by a Committee representative to ensure that all entries are seen. If a judge does not arrive by 2.50pm please draw this to the attention of a marshal.
All money collected during the procession must be returned to the Moot Hall at the end of the carnival procession. A limited number of collecting buckets will be provided to each class.
Drinking Water – we hope that carnival day will be warm and sunny. Entrants should ensure that they have access to drinking water during the procession.
Safety: Whilst the Committee has no wish to spoil the traditional atmosphere of the carnival procession, there have been occasions when matters have got out of hand. If you are going to use water, please ensure that it is clean and that you aim your high spirits at those who want to join in the fun. Some onlookers may be recovering from illness and be upset by boisterous behaviour. Remember that water can damage cameras and clothing.
Vehicles entrants must ensure that:

  • The vehicle arrives in the assembly area no earlier than 1pm and no later than 2pm.
  • Apart from any last minute adjustments or erection of small/loose parts, all construction is completed before arrival in the assembly area.
  • No drop-off/back up vehicles arrive in the assembly area after 2pm. Pedestrian entries can be dropped off in Wentworth Road.
  • An experienced driver is in charge of the vehicle.
  • All the narrow streets and corners of the route can be navigated – width of entry must not exceed 9ft.
  • Sufficient guides walk alongside to ensure the safe passage of the vehicle – it will have to stop and start on numerous occasions during the procession.
  • Participants with the entry are safe at all times – alcohol should not be consumed during the procession.
  • Signs (provided on arrival) are displayed at the front of the vehicle:
  • ‘Please do not throw coins –  you could cause a serious injury’
  • Class Number
  • To minimise risk of injury from coins being thrown onto the vehicle itself, only those walking alongside the entry should carry collecting buckets.
